Saban talks Iron Bowl, Thanksgiving and player smack talk on âHey Coachâ
Nick Saban is set to make his final regular-season appearance on ‘Hey Coach’ Thursday night, his weekly radio show on the Crimson Tide Sports Network. With Alabama football set for a rivalry matchup with Auburn this weekend, Saban will preview the Iron Bowl and talk Thanksgiving.
Saban, along with voice of UA Athletics Eli Gold and a media guest, will be live from Baumhower’s Victory Grille in Tuscaloosa. Here are the highlights from Saban’s appearance.
–WUVA 23 Sports Director Gary Harris is tonight’s media guest.
–”It’s a Wednesday car as long as it’s not raining,” Saban said of his Lamborghini driving habits.
–”When you’re actually in the football part of it, what’s the plan? What do I have to do to execute the plan? That’s the process of what you have to do. Then, what’s your sense of purpose?” Saban said of players focusing on the game this week while managing family expectations, Thanksgiving plans, and any residual rat poison.
–Saban said he and Miss Terry will likely have 15 players over for dinner tomorrow. Players had the option to go home if they lived close enough.
–Saban agreed with Peewee from Grand Bay in that Alabama’s offensive line improved week over week. Saban went on to credit Auburn’s defensive front, saying it’s a different challenge than other opponents have faced last week.
–Saban is describing his tight ends, noting some have different abilities. Amari Niblack is a good receiving option, Saban said, but he can’t block like CJ Dippre or Robbie Ouzts.
–”I don’t see it,” Saban said of the idea that weirdness takes over whenever UA and Auburn play. Saban argued what he said on Monday: The team who plays the best always earns the Iron Bowl victory.
“When you get stuff in your head it’s the same thing I said before. People who lose, think they’re gonna lose. People who win think they’re gonna win. People who think weird stuff happens, weird stuff happens. Weird stuff doesn’t really happen. … Name the place in the SEC that isn’t tough to play.”
Saban specifically cited the 2013 Kick Six game and how UA had multiple drives stall out in the red zone that would’ve put the game away before Chris Davis settled under a missed field goal.
–”Most of the guys that we recruit understand that this is a big game because it’s a national game,” Saban said when asked if he educates players about the history of the Iron Bowl.
–Saban was asked about what’ll be on the menu tomorrow and he answered turkey, dressing, ham, “lots of gravy.” Saban said it’s good to connect with players in a “more natural setting” away from meetings and the practice field.
–Saban says this year’s players are able to joke with him. After commenting on one player’s tights this week in practice, Saban said, the team accused him of bundling up against the cold too. Saban said he had to prove to them he wasn’t wearing leg warmers or stockings.
“They know how to get on me, don’t think they don’t.”
–”I don’t think players have the same developmental process they once did,” Saban said when asked about freshmen playing time.
–”One of the things we really try to do with our players, and we have a few that violate this and it upsets me to no end, is you don’t talk to the other team. You don’t talk to the other players in practice. You don’t dog the players in practice because that kind of creates an emotional situation between you and that player which could lead to emotional outbreak, emotional decision, somebody does something stupid.”
“I hate to say that about any player. I hate to say that about any player on our team. The more arrogant you are, the more you think you’re being disrespected when you somebody says something to you and you react poorly to it, and bad things happen.”
–Saban thanks the fans for their “patience” as Alabama has gone through “astonishing” growth this season. The coach ends his final word wishing everyone a happy holiday.
